MILES CITY, MONTANA: Molly Magestro has been at Miles Community College since 2017, working as a college writing instructor.
A typical workday for Molly ranges from teaching online and hyflex classes and meeting with individual students to talk with them about their writing.
“I don’t spend as much time in the classroom as I might like,” stated Molly, “but most days I get to meet with students and learn from the ways they think and approach things. Most days are good!”
Molly is originally from Green Bay, Wisconsin and her first job growing, as it was for many, was babysitting. She now enjoys teaching writing at the college level.
“My secret is I tell all of my classes they are my favorite to teach, and it’s true! I love writing and all that it enables us to do, so any class where I get to talk about writing is my favorite.”
Her favorite part of working at MCC is the students. “My favorite part is helping them build confidence in their ideas,” Molly said. “My greatest achievements are the students who leave class with me saying they feel more confident in themselves as writers. They did most of the work, but I helped!”
Molly describes herself as inclusive, supportive, inquisitive, knowledgeable, and intersectional. She loves to read (200 books a year!), throw pottery, and would be a self-proclaimed stay-at-home aunt or hermit in the north woods of Wisconsin if not teaching writing. She also loves to travel and is working on visiting all 50 states, with only three left to go.
When asked if she could share one piece of advice, Molly answered, “Hard work outweighs talent every time.”
