Pioneer Profiles: Meet Charles Denny

MILES CITY, MONTANA: Charles Denny has been working as a faculty member for MCC as an English Instructor for three years and hails from the city of Great Falls, Montana, where he had his first job delivering newspapers for the Great Falls Tribune.

His favorite course to teach covers post-colonial literature, and he enjoys providing an opportunity to discuss and explore topics that cross the borders between nations, religions, and languages.

“Colonialism has affected (and still affects) every human being on the planet in some way,” he states. “So, teaching this subject is super easy and super fulfilling because every student can find some deep, personal connection to what they are reading.”

A typical workday for Charles includes reading papers, answering emails, and teaching classes. He also spends times meeting with students and watching YouTube videos.

Charles enjoys life and loves to play games outside of work, whether they’re video games, board games, or physical games, and claims his greatest achievement is not having made his career the most important aspect. “I work so that I can afford to goof off. And I can afford to goof off a lot,” he says.

When asked what he would be doing if not working at MCC, his answer is simple: “I guess I’d be looking for a different job. I have no idea what that would be until it happens.”

Charles’ relaxed attitude about life also shows through when offering advice and encourages putting effort into finding something you want to do and then putting the effort into doing it as well as you can.

“Life is a giant, unexpected adventure,” he states. “There’s no need to seek interesting experiences. Something cool will always come along. I just sit back and let the fun come to me!”
