MISSOULA, MONTANA: Montana Campus Compact (MTCC), a seventeen-campus higher education network that includes Miles Community College, honored student-athletes from across the state of Montana for their outstanding community service work at the November 19th Brawl of the Wild Football Game in Bozeman.

Each year MTCC recognizes one student-athlete from each affiliate campus who has dedicated their efforts to serving the community while also pursuing their college degrees/certificates and participating in college sports.

Representing Miles Community College on the list of recipients is Blayne Hubing of Circle, Montana. Hubing is a third-year student at MCC, having received a degree in Ag Production in the spring of 2022, and is currently pursuing an additional degree in Equine Studies. He is a member of the MCC Rodeo Team, as both a team roper and a calf roper, participates in the MCC Young Farmers and Ranchers (YFR) club, and also serves as a Resident Assistant (RA) while living on campus. He has also previously served on the MCC Student Senate and was recently selected to represent the college at the Montana Farm Bureau Federation State Discussion Meet (through YFR) in January.

“Community service and volunteering are so important, especially at my age” stated Hubing. “It helps college students get more involved in the local community and vice versa. I really enjoy doing it.”

“Blayne has always been an active member on campus,” said Jessica Lofland, MCC Coordinator of Student Life and College Housing. “His leadership and service to the community set an example for other students. I’m proud to have him a part of our Residence Hall team.”

President Slinger reiterated the importance of community. “As President Villmer said, community is our middle name,” stated Slinger. “You could not invest more in Montana citizens than with community colleges.”

While student life at MCC keeps him busy, Hubing still finds time to enjoy personal hobbies such as playing basketball, roping, and dabbling in beadwork for belts and other western accessories. He also shares his skills with other MCC Students by setting up roping sessions (using a practice dummy) in the main campus parking lot, as part of his event and program hosting duties as an RA. “I love the atmosphere of MCC,” commented Hubing.

For 29 years, Montana Campus Compact and its affiliate campuses have supported students, faculty, and communities across Montana with programs that encourage and recognize community service. Montana Campus Compact and the State of Montana are proud to honor the athletes whose extensive volunteer efforts have been of great benefit to their communities.

“College students in Montana do amazing community work, and their investment of time, talent, and energy help improve our communities across the state,” said Josh Vanek, Executive Director of MTCC. “Campus Compact’s Montana Athletes in Service Award honors the contributions of student athlete-volunteers.”
