Miles Community College was recently the recipient of two anonymous gifts, totaling $10,000, for use of scholarships to honor James “Jim” Lucas, who passed away earlier this year.
Lucas played a pivotal role throughout the college’s 80-year history. He served on the MCC Board of Trustees for 59 of those 80 years, including as the President of the Endowment Board. The James P. Lucas Hall administration building on the MCC campus was named in his honor in 2009.
The MCC Foundation board will be using a Matching Challenge Fundraiser in order to support this campaign in conjunction with the Dual Enrollment Program currently in place with Custer County District High School. Funds must match the $10,000 gift, leaving a total of $20,000 to support scholarships for local high school students.
The Dual Enrollment Program allows high school students to take classes through the college while still enrolled at CCDHS. MCC has long been a pioneer in the area of dual enrollment, having launched a concurrent enrollment program with Custer County District High School in 1993.
“This is a wonderful win for the students and families here in Miles City, as well as the college,” states MCC President Ron Slinger. “This is a wonderful opportunity for our students, and we are so grateful for the generosity of others. This scholarship will help continue the Jim Lucas legacy here at MCC.”
