MILES CITY, MONTANA: Ron Slinger’s journey to Miles Community College began in Burton, Ohio, where he grew up learning the value of hard work early in life. His first job—baling hay—wasn’t easy, but it laid the foundation for the strong work ethic and grounded perspective he carries with him today as President of Miles Community College.
Now over six years into his time at MCC, Ron’s days are filled with both responsibility and connection. Much of his schedule is spent in meetings, working through the many moving parts that keep a college running. But just as important to him are the moments outside of those meetings—walking across campus, visiting with students, and connecting with faculty, staff, and community members.
As he puts it, “I spend the majority of my time in meetings, but I also enjoy getting out of my office and interacting with everyone at the college and in the community.” It’s that balance between leadership and presence that shapes how he approaches his role.
What stands out most to Ron about MCC is the people. “I absolutely love our students,” he says, noting the energy and purpose they bring to campus. Just as meaningful to him is the strong sense of community among faculty and staff.
“I really enjoy the family atmosphere,” he adds, something he sees as a defining characteristic of MCC.
Ron describes himself as happy, kind, outgoing, friendly, and funny—qualities that are evident in the way he leads and interacts with others. His advice reflects those same values: “Life is truly all about relationships, so remember to give others grace and be kind whenever possible.”
When reflecting on his career, Ron points to becoming president of Miles Community College as his greatest achievement. It’s a role he approaches with both pride and humility, recognizing the responsibility it carries. For him, leadership is not just about overseeing an institution, but about serving the people within it.
Outside of work, Ron enjoys spending time on the golf course—even if, as he admits, he’s not particularly good at it. It’s less about perfection and more about enjoying the experience, something that aligns with his broader outlook on life.
Travel is another passion. Ron has already explored 40 states and several countries around the world, including China, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe. Still, his list of future destinations is long. He hopes to visit the remaining U.S. states and continue traveling internationally to places like England, Ireland, Italy, and Greece.
If he weren’t working in higher education, Ron says he would want to dedicate his time to meaningful causes, possibly working as a fundraiser for organizations like St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the Special Olympics—roles that reflect his desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
Through his leadership, Ron Slinger continues to shape the direction of Miles Community College while staying grounded in what matters most: relationships, community, and the success of the students he serves.
