MILES CITY, MONTANA: Director of Marketing and Communications BeKa Stein Phipps never seems to have the same day twice while working at Miles Community College.
While she claims her days consist of “lots and lots of emails”, she also states that her job involves completely different projects and duties daily.
BeKa spends her time on campus taking pictures/videos, creating graphics, managing social media pages, updating website content, creating print publications and marketing materials, assisting with athletic events and promotion, and working with outside entities for general advertising and marketing opportunities on behalf of the college.
“Every day involves different projects with different people and departments,” she stated. “I really enjoy that aspect of my job-it's never boring!”
When asked her favorite part of working at MCC, BeKa credits her coworkers for making it fun and inviting. “I have made some incredible friendships here.”
BeKa was born in Anchorage, Alaska before moving to Billings, Montana halfway through her childhood. She has been working in the marketing department at MCC for over five years and credits graduating from MCC as an adult learner in 2020 as one of her greatest achievements. “I went back to school as an adult which was slightly terrifying,” BeKa commented. “But it brought me to my career here at MCC. It was a turning point that led me down the path of where I wanted to be, working in marketing and graphic design.”
She began working as an intern while attending MCC before moving into her full-time role in marketing on campus. “I loved it so much here as a student, I never left!”
BeKa spends her time outside of work playing in the outdoors and creating art. She likes to hike, fish, and rock hunt with her dogs, as well as spend time indoors creating jewelry as a metalsmith and making crafts. She describes herself as friendly, funny, creative, caffeinated, and a crazy cat-lady.
If she wasn’t working at the college, BeKa states she would love to be a full-time jewelry artist and would love to travel to Iceland someday.
And her advice to everyone is short and simple. “If it doesn’t feed your soul, let it go.”
