Miles Community College has announced plans to reopen the Centra fitness center and gymnasium located on campus, with modified operations, in accordance to the Governor’s Order placed on May 7, 2020.
Beginning Monday, May 18, the MCC Centra will be open from 6:00am to 7:00pm Monday through Friday and 9:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday. Hours of operation are open to registered members only, with no day or walk-in passes being offered at this time. Registered members include paid members, MCC faculty and staff, and MCC registered students.
Upon the directives from the Governor’s office, the occupancy of the Centra will not exceed 50% capacity during this phase of reopening and access points into the building will be monitored. Members will be required to check-in and check-out at the first floor desk upon arriving and exiting the premises.
“We were excited to hear ‘gyms’ listed in the latest phase of reopening,” says Centra Director, Michael Turck. “It’s a great feeling to have a definitive date to give to our patrons. We look forward to seeing our member’s faces, and we want to make sure we do that in a slow and responsible manner.”
Fitness equipment will be limited based on location within the Centra to ensure proper social distancing measures, allowing for six feet of space between units. Members using free weights may have a spotter when necessary, limited to two total people during the exercise. Sanitization stations with disposable wipes will be located throughout the facility to encourage ‘wipe downs’ after each use by patrons.
While indoor classes will not be permitted at this time, the Centra staff will be looking into outdoor group class opportunities that meet all government guidelines. The gymnasium will be limited to use of no more than four people per basket. MCC recommends patrons to be mindful of social distance requirements and encourages the use of face coverings when possible. The Centra staff will be equipped with masks at all times.
MCC staff will be increasing cleaning efforts during this phase of reopening and will help enforce social distancing and proper wipe down methods in all areas of the facility. As always, MCC encourages patrons with fevers, shortness of breath, or other Covid-19 symptoms to refrain from using the facilities.
