Pioneer Profiles: Meet Mary Luhr

MILES CITY, MONTANA: Mary Luhr grew up on a farm in Norfolk, Nebraska where her first job was “detasseling” corn (removing the tassel from the very top of a corn plant), which is more than slightly different than her current position as a Medical Technologist Adjunct Phlebotomy Lab Instructor at Miles Community College.

Mary has been working at MCC since the fall of 2020 and loves feeling like a member of a special family when asked her favorite part of working at the college.

“I consider teaching my passion of phlebotomy and seeing the students’ excitement as my greatest achievements,” she stated when asked about her career so far.

She describes herself as caring, passionate, professional, trustworthy, and a perfectionist.

Mary currently spends her days lecturing about lab safety, policies, and tube types before helping the students practice drawing blood techniques on each other. She states that she would still be working part-time in the lab at Billings Clinic in Miles City if she were no longer teaching at MCC.

Her enthusiastic attitude extends beyond campus, where she enjoys traveling with her husband to visit family and historical sites.

When asked what adventure or experience she has wanted to have, she boldly states, “I’m living it! If I wanted something different, I would go after it!”

Her advice to others echos the previous statement: “Wake up every day to the gifts you prayed for yesterday!”
